In recognition of World Drowning Prevention Day on Thursday 25th July, we’re proud to highlight one of our outstanding swimmers at Oran Park Leisure Centre, Austin.
At just 11 years old, Austin already shows the dedication, talent, and positive mindset that make him a role model in the water. His swimming journey began when he was just six months old, and it’s been full steam ahead ever since.
We asked Austin a few questions about his experience in the pool:
Tell us a bit about yourself – what inspired you to join the program or start swimming regularly?
"Hi, I’m Austin and I’m 11. I started going to the pool when I was 6 months because my parents wanted me to learn water safety, but I ended up really enjoying it. I think I got more serious about it after I made it into NSWCIS where I represented my school – it made me want to train harder and see how far I could go."
What’s your current routine and what do you love most about swimming?
"I train six times a week, mostly in the afternoons after school and sometimes early in the morning too. I also play basketball and badminton for fun. My favourite thing about swimming is the feeling of getting better, like when you beat your personal best. I also love how the squad feels like a big family. You get to meet a lot of like minded friends who are all working hard too, and we cheer each other on at training and competitions."
What goals have you achieved and what are you working towards?
"Some of my biggest achievements so far are breaking the school butterfly record, becoming the NASSA Age Champion, and making it into the state top 10 two years in a row. Right now, I’m working on getting faster times and hoping to qualify for Nationals when I turn 14."
How has swimming impacted your fitness or wellbeing?
"Swimming has made me a lot stronger. I think it’s helped with my focus too, even at school. It’s also great for managing stress, if I’ve had a tough day, going for a swim helps me feel better. And being around my swim friends always cheers me up."
What advice would you give someone new to the pool?
"Don’t worry if it feels hard or like you’re not getting better – you are! Just keep trying and you’ll improve. Listen to your coach, do your best, and make sure you have fun. Swimming is really fun once you get into it, and you’ll make awesome friends along the way!"
Thank you, Austin, for sharing your story, your dedication and love for swimming is truly inspiring!
